USD 241 Board Meeting - January 2020

Roll Call:  Ab Smith, outgoing president, Todd Selzer, Chance Rains, Camron Funk, Craig Sloan, Stephanie Johnson, Mark Kuhlman, Ross Cox, Russell Orton, Kenneth Huff, Val Poe, Mr. House and students, Etta Walker

Seating of new board members

Election of board officers:

President:  Camron Funk moved to nominate Craig Sloan.  Todd Selzer seconded the motion.  Nominations ceased.   Motion carried 6 yea. 1 abstain (Sloan)

Vice-president:  Stephanie Johnson moved to nominate Camron Funk.  Mark Kuhlman seconded the motion.  Nominations ceased.  Motion carried 6 yea, 1 abstain (Funk)

Approval of Agenda:

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Camron Funk to approve the agenda, as amended.   Motion carried 7 yea

Approval of Consent Items:

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Camron Funk to approve consent items A-C (warrants; minutes; financial reports) as presented.   Motion carried 7 yea.

Staff presentation: Mr. Jeffrey House and students

Mr. House and four of his 5th grade students gave a science presentation to the board.  The board was very impressed with their presentation.  

Executive session: non-elected personnel

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Stephanie Johnson to go into executive session for ten (10) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons and return to this room at 7:00 p.m...  Mr. Orton and Mr. Huff are invited in.  Motion carried 7 yea.  

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Stephanie Johnson to go into executive session for five (5) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons and return to this room at 7:05 p.m.  Mr. Orton and Mr. Huff are invited in.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Stephanie Johnson to go into executive session for five (5) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons and return to this room at 7:10 p.m.  Mr. Orton and Mr. Huff are invited in.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Todd Selzer to go into executive session for five (5) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said person and return to this room at 7:15 p.m.  Mr. Orton and Mr. Huff are invited in.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Administrative reports:

NWKSC- no report

NWKTC-Russell Orton - Mr. Orton gave an update on NWKTC happenings.

6-12 principal: Mr. Huff - JH activities coming up; JH cross country proposal; uniform rotation proposal; 

Supt./ k-5 Prin:  Mr. Orton - Tobacco free school grounds policy from state; KASB will get back to us where they stand with this.; project EVERS (ending violence and its effects in rural schools)—five year grant; A/C unit on office needs replaced $11,850.00 installed; new board training Jan 29; Mr. Orton has signed up all new board members for this training. 

Discussion/action items:

Craig Sloan excused himself from the meeting.

Approval of contract addendum: Inga Sloan-Life skills class

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Mark Kuhlman to approve an addendum to Inga Sloan contract, to include a full second semester life skills class.  Motion carried 6 yea.

Craig Sloan re-entered the meeting.

Approve out-of-district students

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Chance Rains to approve the out-of-district application for Ellie Edwards, Winona.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Ross Cox to approve the out-of-district application for the Dansel children, Weskan.    Motion carried 7 yea. 

Appoint NWKSC representative - Stephanie Johnson graciously volunteered for the position.

Negotiations - Negotiating committee---Craig Sloan; Todd Selzer; Mark Kuhlman

Class sponsorship - Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Camron Funk to accept the resignation from Mark Kuhlman as class sponsor.  Motion carried 6 yea.

Stephanie Johnson moved, seconded by Mark Kuhlman to go into executive session for ten (10) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons and return to this room at 9:20 p.m.  the board only.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Todd Selzer to go into executive session for ten (10) minutes, for the purpose of discussing non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons and return to this room at 9:30 p.m.  the board only.  Motion carried 7 yea.

Adjournment: Craig Sloan moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:35 p.m.
