The Strand Theater was showing “The Distinguished Gentleman” starring Eddie Murphy, Lane Smith, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The following movie was “Leap of Faith” starring Steve Martin, Debra Winger, and Liam Neeson.
Stephanie Swartz, daughter of Richard & Lilian Swartz of Sharon Springs, was listed on the All-A Honor Roll at Pittsburg State University. She was in her fourth year as an elementary education student.
The Echo Creek Bluegrass Band of Northwest Kansas performed in the Goodland high school auditorium, sponsored by the Western Plains Arts Association.
Lena Schemm celebrated her 93rd birthday with many visitors, cards, and phone calls.
The Weskan Show Choir invited the public to their annual Snowflake Showcase on January 30, with a spaghetti supper served by the junior class.
60 Years Ago (1963)
Judge F. H. Dobbs died at the age of 68. He had been the Wallace County probate judge for the prior 10 years and had recently taken the oath for another two-year term.
Carl Larson, son of Mrs. Vivian Larson, was awarded a band scholarship at the Garden City Junior College. He was a 1962 graduate of WCCHS and 4-year band member, playing trumpet.
Jean Dexter Lutz was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi, national scholastic honorary society, at Kansas State University.
Bill Bowman, son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack Bowman of Wallace, returned to Washington DC where he would finish his work at the Smithsonian Institute.
The Strand Theater was showing “Steel Claw” starring George Montgomery. The following movie was “The Second Time Around” starring Debbie Reynolds, Steve Forest, Andy Griffith, and Juliet Prowse.
110 Years Ago (1913)
Mrs. Andrews took over running the dining room in the Sasnak Hotel as H. B. Queter and wife took a trip to Denver, Colorado.
J. W. Glick’s sale at Weskan was well attended on that Saturday. Mr. Glick expected to move to Mountain Grove, MO.
The editor stated that Gus Newmann was a good man for the town. He had refereed the wrestling match one night that week, then went to the Catholic Fair given by the church ladies and served as auctioneer, and then led the grand march in the dance that followed.
S. J. Fish and Earl McKinley were moving a building that they bought from the Weber Lumber Co. to the south side.
Mrs. J. F. Blattenburg and children were set to move to their farm in Missouri to spend the summer months. Mr. Blattenburg had a nice farm there but was going to stick to his job as Chief Dispatcher for Union Pacific Railroad.
