25 Years Ago (1997)

The Strand Theater was showing “My Best Friend’s Wedding” starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, and Cameron Diaz. The following movie was “Walt Disney’s Hercules” featuring the voices of Tate Donovan, James Woods, and Danny DeVito.


Construction began on the new Oak Tree Inn motel and diner, owned by Lodging Enterprises of Wichita. Delbert & Mae Smith were hired to do the dirt work. 


Several Wallace County residents traveled to Goodland for the parade of Clydesdale horses.


Prairie Manor had two upcoming events. The first was a Nursing Aide class given by Gail McGatlin RN, Director of Nursing. The second was a going away party for Lori Rodriguez, Administrator. 


The Sharon Springs Library invited all children to attend the Kasey Klown program of magic and fun. 

55 Years Ago (1967)

The children of Clifford & Bertha Knouse honored their parents with a reception for their 50th wedding anniversary. It was held at the Harold Frasier residence.


Rev. Tom L. Bocox was the new minister at the Pilgrim Holiness Church. The Bocox family had lived in Borger, Texas, before moving briefly to Colby, and then on to Wallace County.


Henry Clay McAlister, son of Mr. & Mrs. Clay McAlister, was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Kansas City. He required 174 stitches.


The Smoky Valley 4-H Club held a rummage and bake sale in the Township Hall from 3-8 pm on Friday.


The Strand Theater was showing “The Corrupt Ones” starring Robert Stack, Elke Sommer, and Nancy Kwan. The following movie was “Khartoum” starring Charlton Heston and Laurence Olivier.
 

100 Years Ago (1922)

G. G. Immell installed a radio outfit in his office, with it being the first outfit installed in the county. The editor noted that patrons would soon be treated to wireless concerts and other programs.


The friends and neighbors of the newly Mr. & Mrs. J. M. Enlow gave them an old fashioned “shiv-a-ree” at their home. The bride was Miss Anna Hennick, former school teacher.


The Strand Theater’s Monday program included a Lloyd comedy, Aesop’s fables, and episodes 10 and 11 of “White Eagle.”


Mr. A. R. Throm, formerly of Marysville, put in a shoe repair shop in the building where Guy Richards had his electric shop. The Throms were living in the Coates house in the west part of town.


The Weskan News sectioned mentioned that C. E. Swanson was appointed clerk of the school board, as Guy L. Shriver had resigned.
