USD 241 Board Meeting - December 2019

Roll call:  Ab Smith, Craig Sloan, Cecil Pearce, Karli Springsteel (absent), Todd Selzer, Heath Perry, Camron Funk, Russell Orton, Kenneth Huff, Val Poe, Stephanie Johnson, Mark Kuhlman, Ross Cox, Chance Rains, Mike Ronen (SWPRSC), Christy Hammer, Corbin Smith, Aubrey Kuhlman

Approval of Agenda:

Heath Perry moved, seconded by Cecil Pearce to approve the agenda, as amended.  Motion carried 6 yea.

Approval of Consent items:  A-C

Cecil Pearce moved, seconded by Craig Sloan to approve consent items A-C (warrants; financial reports; and minutes) as presented.  Motion carried 6 yea.

Superintendent search: Mike Ronen

Mike Ronen presented to the board his proposal for beginning the superintendent search.  The board and Mr. Ronen discussed the direction to go for this selection.

Cecil Pearce moved, seconded by Camron Funk to go into executive session for twenty (20) minutes, to discuss superintendent search, and return to this room at 7:35 p.m.  the board invites Mike Ronen and Val Poe in.  Motion carried 6 yea. 

Cecil Pearce moved, seconded by Heath Perry, to go back into executive session for twenty-five (25) minutes, for the purpose of discussing superintendent search, and return to this room at 8:00 p.m.  the board invites Mike Ronen and Val Poe in.  Motion carried 6 yea.

Staff presentation: Christy Hammer 

Mrs. Hammer is teaching a personal finance class this semester and is thoroughly enjoying the class.

Executive session: student confidential report

Craig Sloan moved, seconded by Todd Selzer to go into executive session for five (5) minutes, to discuss student matters, to protect the privacy rights of said person and return to this room at 8:35 p.m.  motion carried 6 yea.

Cecil Pearce moved, seconded by Craig Sloan to go into executive session for five (5) minutes, to discuss student issues, to protect the privacy rights of said person, and return to this room at 8:40 p.m.  motion carried 6 yea.

Administrative reports:

A. NWKSC-Cecil Pearce 

Gave a short report

B. NWKTC-Russell Orton - It was a short meeting; addressed their programs.

C. Principal 6-12-Kenneth Huff

BB schedule; scholar’s bowl; music trip; NHS ice cream social;  no applications for forensics coach; policy regarding staff lunches.

D. Supt/K-5 principal-Russell Orton

Wheelchair lift does not fit; fire marshal report was good;

Discussion/action items:

1. Discussion/approval of senior trip destination

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Heath Perry to approve the senior trip to Taos, New Mexico.  Motion carried 6 yea.

2. Approval of contract addendum: Inga Sloan, life skills class

Todd Selzer moved, seconded by Heath Perry to revise her contract to include the second semester.  Motion carried 5 yea. 1 abstain (Sloan)

3. Approve substitute list: Kody Van Laeys

Camron Funk moved, seconded by Todd Selzer to approve adding Kody Van Laeys to our substitute list.  Motion carried 6 yea.

4. Policy on lunch bills for staff;

The board discussed our policy on staff lunches.  The board instructed Mr. Orton and Mr. Huff to set the dollar amount cut-off at $20.00 and to inform the staff member(s) that they will no longer be allowed to eat until said bill is paid in full.   

5. Outgoing board members recognition

The outgoing board members, Karli Springsteel, Cecil Pearce, Ab Smith and Heath Perry were presented with a small gift for serving on the board. Cecil Pearce 20 years, Ab Smith 8 years, Karli Springsteel and Heath Perry, 4 years. Also the board gave a welcome to the new board members, Stephanie Pearce, Ross Cox, Chance Rains and Mark Kuhlman.

Executive session: non-elected personnel

Ab Smith moved, seconded by Craig Sloan to go into executive session for five (5) minutes with the current board only, to discuss non-elected personnel, to protect the privacy rights of said persons, and return to this room at 9:35p.m.  motion carried 6 yea.

Adjournment: Ab Smith moved to adjourn at 9:45 p.m.
