John Roscoe Hurley

John Roscoe Hurley, age 79, died in Wichita, Kansas on November 4, 2024. After living most of his adult life in Wallace County, KS, he moved to the Ranch House Nursing Home in Garden City, KS.
He was born June 6, 1945 in Phoenix Arizona, the son of John W. and Alene E. (Whiteman) Hurley, shortly thereafter the family moved to southeastern Colorado. In 1963 he graduated from Bent County High School in Las Animas, Co. He married Donna Degurse that same year, and together they attended Trinidad State Junior College where he studied criminal justice and gunsmithing. They were blessed with 3 sons: John Duane, Marc Lee, and Justin Ross. He later married Phyllis Collins Magwire in 1975. Phyllis had 4 children: Darrell, Debbie, Boone and Dana Magwire. John’s professional journey was as varied and expansive as the roads he would later come to travel. John’s career included roles as an insurance adjuster, cook, Deputy sheriff and farmer, but his heart always steered him back to the driver’s seat of a truck. A lifelong love of truck driving took him on countless adventures through the continental United States, Canada, and Mexico, transporting everything from farm commodities to aluminum cans. Despite the demanding nature of his profession, John was a pillar of constancy in the lives of his loved ones. His family always knew that no matter where his travels took him, he would be home for the moments that mattered most-holidays, family gatherings, and every cherished celebration in between. He was straightforward with his opinions and advice. He was generous man and always willing to help anyone in need, as well as an avid gun collector and proud defender of the 2nd amendment. John was a man of his word with strong convictions about the world he lived in and stood firmly by those beliefs.
John was proceeded in death by his parents, second wife Phyllis, brother Gary Hurley, son Darrel Magwire, and son-in-law Kennan Bussen.
John is survived by his brother Michael (Teresa) Hurley, sister Lark (Dave) Harvey, his first wife Donna; Children John D. (Rudie) Hurley, Marc L. (Karen) Hurley, & Justin R. (Amanda) Hurley; Debbie Bussen, Boone (Donna) Magwire, Dana Magwire, numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren & great grandchildren. Burial took place at Wallace Cemetery in Wallace, Kansas. The family suggests memorials to Little Wranglers of Wallace County or Young Guns Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home 412 N 7th Street, Garden City, KS.
