What is Lantern Light School? Meet the magistra! That’s Latin for “teacher.” Mrs. Andrea Lowry lives in Hoxie, KS and has launched what she refers to as a “hybrid school that combines elements of homeschooling and traditional schools.” Mrs. Lowry sets the curriculum and learning goals of the classes, but students work independently at home during the week. While students have the opportunity to learn with the group, they also retain the “primacy of family in their lives and freedom of schedule that comes with homeschooling.” This allows students to “enjoy the best of both learning worlds.” When asked why she decided to embark on this brave adventure, Mrs. Lowry stated,
“There are wonderful benefits to having strong families. When families are strong, children have the security of knowing who they are and who they belong to, they receive the love and discipline they need, and out of all those things, the children then have the best potential for learning. I offer a school choice to families who want to have primary leadership in their children’s education but would like to have someone come alongside to help with challenging learning areas. Here in Sharon Springs I teach writing and literature, rhetorical skills from the classical tradition, speaking and reading the Latin language, and science.”
So how is Lantern Light School going? Mrs. Lowry says, “I happily jump in my car every Monday to get all the way to Sharon Springs.” She says she “cannot imagine anything more fun than watching seven-year-olds learn why water has surface tension, or hearing eleven-year-olds debate whether the old Cob should steal the trumpet to save his son, or getting to explain where the word “procrastinate” comes from, or telling beautiful stories about the search for the Holy Grail and a true kingdom that never ends.” One of the most “delightful” moments of teaching at Lantern Light School for her is “watching the light bulb of learning pop on right before my eyes.”
We are as delighted to have Mrs. Lowry as she is to teach us!
