What is advent and why do we celebrate it?
Advent is a Latin word that means “coming” or “arrival”. Advent is a season of the Church calendar that stretches from four Sundays before Christmas Day through Christmas Eve. If you attend any Christian Church, you likely already know this.
Advent is a season full of hope, expectation, and longing. Charles Wesley wrote over 6,000 hymns in his lifetime, “Come Though Long-Expected Jesus” is among his most beloved and well known. The lyrics to this song express many Advent themes and model the Israelites’ waiting and longing for a King who would bring freedom, rest, strength, and consolation.
During Advent, we anticipate and prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus. But Christmas Day was not the beginning of humanity’s relationship with God. Our God is three persons- God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit- yet still one God. This season is a reflection on the wonderful reality of the incarnation, when God took on human nature and flesh.
Isaiah 25:9 is one of most powerful verses to me. It reads, “On that day it will be said, “Look, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He has saved us. This is the Lord; we have waited for Him. Let’s rejoice and be glad in His salvation!” The Lord is coming again. Those of us who have ears to hear and eyes to see, will recognize Him within our lives. Life is about living the advent season every day, and anxiously waiting for the second coming of the Lord!
