Hear ye, hear ye!

The Wallace County Home Educators would like to announce the addition of a journalism course to their curriculum.  Lace David, publisher/editor of The Western Times has agreed to lead these young message bringers.
The newly formed journalism class meets once a month during “Lunch and Learn” held at the Wesleyan Church.
In October, the students, along with Mrs. David, discussed what this course should look like, how often to submit articles, and other expectations.
November’s session was spent brainstorming a name for their publication. After spending the hour tossing around ideas, voting on typeface, and helping with logo design, The Homeschool Herald was born.
The students pitched in to work on a special page for the Thanksgiving issue of The Western Times and have continued to work toward the goal of publishing their first full page.
“Our overall goal is to publish a full page “issue” weekly, but it may take a few more class sessions to get the kinks worked out,” Mrs. David explained.
The students will tackle a variety of subjects and explore different styles of writing.  Time will be spent reporting on current and upcoming events as well as hitting the history books to write about interesting moments and people from the past.
Mrs. David will handle the majority of the layout and design initially but plans to assign many of the duties to the students as they gain experience.
Mrs. David continued, “this is a new experience for students and teacher, alike.  I anticipate the publication evolving as the students become more prolific at writing, editing, photojournalism, and eventually layout. Students will gain experience in all aspects of the newspaper world.”
