Berna June (Cox) Scott, 92, of Wallace, Kansas, passed away on April 1, 2023, at the Wallace County Community Care Center in Sharon Springs, Kansas. Berna was born May 31, 1930, on the family farm southeast of Sharon Springs in Wallace County, Kansas, the daughter of Harvey and Esther (Ingold) Cox. She was the oldest of three children, followed by brothers Bud and Glenard.
Berna attended the Dover one-room country schoolhouse for grade school. She was a Wallace County Community High School student and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1948. Berna received a Union Pacific Railroad scholarship and attended Kansas State University for her freshman year. Shecontinued her education at Fort Hays State Kansas College, receiving her teaching certificate. During her time at Fort Hays State the major flood of Big Creek occurred in Hays in May 1951. 
On January 2, 1953, Berna married Virgil Allen Scott at the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church. After marriage, Berna and Allen moved to the farm south of Wallace where they raised their loving family. Berna and Allen were blessed with threechildren, Paula, Virgil and Lisa.
Berna had a busy life. At its opening in 1951, Berna was one of the first two teachers at the new Harrison Flats two-teacher rural school. She was the kindergarten teacher at Sharon Springs elementary school in 1966-67, taught at Wallace Grade Schooland served as a substitute teacher for Harrison Flats, Wallaceand Sharon Springs elementary schools for several years. A self-trained accountant, Berna was meticulous at keeping the books for the Scott farm operation for many, many years. She was also an avid gardener, tending to her beautiful flower and rose garden and growing a sizable vegetable garden every summer. Her perennial strawberry patch was large and very productive.
Faith, family, and the community were important to Berna. She loved her Lord and was a member of the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church. Berna was active in United Methodist Women, Martha's Circle, Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge, Dinas Community Club, Sunflower Extension Homemakers Unit, Dover Grange, and engaging her children in the many activities of 4-H. Berna and Allen loved to travel together and saw much of the country during their 68 years of marriage. Berna loved her family and was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Berna was preceded in death by her husband, Allen; daughter, Lisa Scott; great-grandson Trevor Korbe; brother, Bud Cox; son-in-law Joe Korbe; daughter-in-law Trish Davies; and her parents. Berna is survived by her children, daughter Paula Korbe, Sharon Springs, Kansas; and son Virgil Scott and his wife Diane of Broomfield, Colorado; brother Glenard Cox, Salina, Kansas; 5 grandchildren, Stephanie Stroud, her husband Brad, Lenexa, Kansas; Travis Korbe, Wallace, Kansas; Chris Korbe, his wife Sarah, McPherson, Kansas; Andrew Korbe, his wife Hailey, Garden City, Kansas; Caiti Korbe, Sharon Springs, Kansas; Nicole Scott, Broomfield, Colorado; 19 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. the Sharon Springs United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs with Pastor Galen Crippen officiating. Visitation preceded the funeral from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Church. Burial will follow the funeral in the Sharon Springs Cemetery. 
The family suggests memorials be contributed to Fort Hays State University Foundation and designated to the Allen & Berna (Cox) Scott Family Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for Wallace County students, or the Wallace County Foundation, designated to the Allen & Berna (Cox) Scott Endowment.
