USD 242 Board Meeting - March 2025

CALL TO ORDER
The Board of Education of Unified School District 242, Wallace County, Kansas, met in regular session at 7:00pm in the Board Room on March 10th, 2025 with Board President Eric Purvis presiding. 
ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Mr. Aaron Aldridge, Mr. Gabe Cox, Mr. Nolan Cox, Mr. Eric Purvis, Mr. Kyle Riedel (arrived at 7:03), Mr. Macy Sexson, Mrs. Christine Smith  
OTHERS PRESENT: Mr. John Cox (Superintendent), Mrs. Heavenly McQuillan (Clerk), Mrs. Laura Sexson (Asst. Principal), Mr. Brett Clow, Mrs. Julie Aldridge, Mr. Nick Billion, Mr. Darrell Kohlman
APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Mrs. Smith (Mr. Gabe Cox) moved to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried 6-0.
HEARINGS FROM INDIVIDUALS IN THE AUDIENCE 
COMMUNICATIONS TO AND FROM THE BOARD
Darrell Kohlman went over the DCS facilities report with the board and pointed out the common area concerns. He explained what the DCS engineer and architect was looking for while doing the walk through of the school. Mr. Kohlman explained how DCS works and how they can help the school out with finding contractors for smaller districts. 
Mr. Kohlman left at 8:02pm.
Mr. Billion reported on the upcoming possibility of a 9-12 band trip to engage in another competition at Elitch Garden in Denver, CO for the music festival that would be on May 10, 2025. 
Mr. Billion left at 8:06pm. 
Teachers Report: Mrs. Aldridge gave the report about state assessments coming up after Spring Break; the Top Golf trip for 7-12 grade; Mrs. Aldridge, Mrs. Palmer and Mr. Clow are working on the scheduling classes for next school year to present to Mr. John Cox. 
Athletic Director Report: Mr. Clow gave the report on the league music in Ransom; Regional music at Garden City on March 29; Basketball being done for both Jr. High and High School, he talked about the new Sub-state assignments and how the teams were split to get the best teams at the State level; All League meeting for basketball selections were being held Monday, March 10; Jr. High track practice has started, High School will start after Spring Break with the first track meets after Spring Break; Jr. High scholar’s bowl rescheduled for March 24 and the WKLL League is scheduling a Powerlifting meet to be held at Golden Plains. 
Assistant Principal’s Report: Mrs. Sexson gave the report on college reps; ACT is complete and the student feedback on taking the ACT at the school; Events happening in the school this past month; KELI program update and the Women’s Leadership conference she attended; Meeting with Project Frontier and the opportunities they can provide for our district with the grant.  
Superintendent’s Report: Mr. John Cox gave the report on Inclement weather make-up Day decisions; Discussed concession stand and restrooms at Football field quote; Business Money Market Checking Account – Fidelity vs Edward Jones; AptaFund electronic signature; Student Capacity – JBC & JBCC enrollment; Board of Education negotiators to send to annual training; Door open alarms; Water District Grant; Blue house rental and the CTE pathways.  
Mrs. Aldridge left the meeting at 8:28pm
EXECUTIVE SESSION
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Riedel) moved to enter into executive session at 8:28pm.  He further moved to return to the open session at 8:45pm.  The justification for the executive session is to discuss matters relating to student matters.  The purpose for the executive session is to protect the privacy rights of an identifiable individual, under KOMA. Mr. John Cox and Mrs. Laura Sexson were invited to attend. Motion carried 7-0. The meeting reconvened at 8:45pm. 
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Nolan Cox) moved to enter into executive session at 8:45pm. He further moved to return to the open session at 9:30pm. The items to be discussed in the executive is to discuss personal. The justification for the executive session is for the exception for non-elected personnel under KOMA. Motion carried 7-0. Mr. John Cox, Mr. Brett Clow and Mrs. Sexson were invited to attend. Mr. Brett Clow was released from executive session at 9:00pm. The meeting reconvened at 9:30pm.
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Riedel) moved to enter into executive session at 9:30pm. He further moved to return to the open session at 10:00pm. The items to be discussed in the executive is to discuss personal. The justification for the executive session is for the exception for non-elected personnel under KOMA. Motion carried 7-0. Mr. John Cox and Mrs. Sexson were invited to attend. Mr. Sexson left executive session at 9:43pm. The meeting reconvened at 10:00pm.
Mr. Riedel (Mr. Aldridge) moved to enter into executive session at 10:07pm to discuss negotiations and to return to the open meeting at 10:17pm. The justification for the executive session is the exception for employer-employee negotiations under KOMA, Mr. John Cox was invited to attend.  Motion carried 6-0. Meeting reconvened at 10:17 pm.

CONSENT AGENDA
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Gabe Cox) moved to approve the consent agenda as presented containing the following items:
Approval of the resignations from Mr. John Cox as Student Council Advisor and Mr. Val Reiss as Head Basketball Coach
Approval of the hiring of Ms. Springsteel for Student Council Advisor and Mr. Eric Palmer as the Secondary Social Studies and Ag Ed teacher for 2025-2026 school year; Mr. Greg Robinson and Mrs. Bonnie Sexson as assistant track coaches and split salary and duties between Jr High and High School. 
Approval of the Bills presented
Approve the minutes as presented
Motion carried 6-0.

OLD BUSINESS:
Mr. Cox (Mrs. Smith) moved to approve the Edward Jones money market account as presented. Motion carried 6-0. 
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Nolan Cox) moved to approve the 25-26 Weskan School calendar proposal as presented. Motion carried 6-0. 

NEW BUSINESS
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Riedel) moved to have Mr. Billion send out the permission slips for the Elitch Garden band trip and have students return them, board would approve/disapprove at the April meeting. Motion carried 6-0. 

ADJOURNMENT 
Mr. Nolan Cox (Mr. Gabe Cox) move to adjourn the meeting at 10:44pm. Motion carried 6-0.
