USD 242 Board Meeting - January 2023

February 21, 2023

1.   CALL TO ORDER
The Board of Education of Unified School District 242, Wallace County, Kansas, met in regular session at 7:00 pm in the Board Room on January 9th 2023 with Board President Eric Purvis presiding. 
2.  ROLL CALL
MEMBERS PRESENT: Mr. Aaron Aldridge, Mr. Gabe Cox, Mr. Nolan Cox, Mr. Eric Purvis, Mr. Kyle Riedel, Mr. Macy Sexson
MEMBERS ABSENT: Mrs. Christine Smith
OTHERS PRESENT: Mrs. Amy Rother (Superintendent), Mrs. Candy Cox (Clerk), Mrs. Morgan Welsh, Mrs. Heavenly Mcquillan, Mr. Billy Cox, Mr. Steve Schemm, Mr. Greg Robinson, Mrs. Lissa Sexson, Mr. Bryan Mckinney
3.  ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Mr. Gabe Cox nominated Mr. Eric Purvis for President of the Board.  Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Riedel) moved nominations cease and a unanimous ballot be cast for Mr. Eric Purvis. Mr. Purvis was elected President on a 6-0 vote. 
Mr. Aaron Aldridge nominated Mr. Gabe Cox for Vice President. Mr. Nolan Cox (Mr. Macy Sexson) moved that nominations cease and a unanimous ballot be cast for Mr. Gabe Cox.  Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Riedel (Mr. Gabe Cox) nominated Diane Kuykendall for the position of treasurer and moved that nominations cease and a unanimous ballot be cast for Mrs. Kuykendall.  Motion carried 6-0.
4. APPROVAL OF AGENDA 
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Aaron Aldridge) moved to approve the agenda as presented. Motion carried 6-0.
5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Gabe Cox) moved to approve the minutes of the December meeting as presented. Motion carried 6-0.
6. COMMUNICATIONS TO AND FROM THE BOARD
Heavenly gave a report on senior sneak.
Mr. Robinson and committee discussed upcoming track improvements.
Mrs. Rother presented the board with certificates for Board Appreciation month, followed by the Superintendent's report on (Mr. Gabe Cox will represent the Board) Negotiations Rep, Book Policy, Bus Route, Kitchen Improvements, Small Bus Repairs, Janitor Hours and Snow Shoveling.
7. EXECUTIVE SESSION
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mrs.Sexson) moved to enter into executive session at 8:36 pm to discuss performance and perspective employment, and to return to the open session at 8:45 pm. The justification for the executive session is non-elected personnel exception under KOMA.  The purpose for the executive session is to protect the privacy rights of an identifiable individual. Motion carried 6-0. The meeting reconvened at 8:45 pm.
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Riedel) moved to enter into executive session at 8:45 pm to discuss performance and perspective employment, and to return to the open session at 9:00 pm. The justification for the executive session is non-elected personnel exception under KOMA.  The purpose for the executive session is to protect the privacy rights of an identifiable individual.  Motion carried 6-0. The meeting reconvened at 9:00 pm.
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Sexson) moved to enter into executive session at 9:00 pm to discuss confidential student information pursuant to the exception relating to actions adversely or favorably affecting a student under KOMA, and to return to the open meeting at 9:25 pm. Motion carried 6-0.  The meeting reconvened at 9:25 pm.
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Riedel) moved to enter into executive session at 9:25 pm to discuss confidential student information pursuant to the exception relating to actions adversely or favorably affecting a student under KOMA, and to return to the open meeting at 9:35 pm. Motion carried 6-0.  The meeting reconvened at 9:35 pm.
9.   NEW BUSINESS
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Gabe Cox) moved to conduct the 2023 Board of Education meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the board room. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Nolan Cox) moved to appoint Mr. Gabe Cox as the Board's representative for negotiations. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Nolan Cox (Mr. Riedel) moved to approve the senior sneak trip to.  Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Riedel) moved to pledge $10,000 to the WHS Sports Improvement for the year. Motion carried 6-0.
10. PERSONNEL
Mr. Aldridge (Mr. Sexson) moved to accept the resignation of Kiera Goodwin, elementary aide and after school leader, as of 1/5/23. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Riedel (Mr. Nolan Cox) moved to hire ReNea Mann, teacher for the 2023-24 school year. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Riedel) moved to hire Nick Billion and Jaxon Searight at the rate of $25 per hour to shovel the sidewalks outside of regular working hours when it snows. Motion carried 6-0.
Mr. Sexson (Mr. Riedel) moved to adjust Sarah Patton’s contract to 32 hours at $12 per week. Motion carried 6-0.
11.  APPROVAL OF THE BILLS
Mr. Gabe Cox (Mr. Nolan Cox) moved to approve the bills as presented.  Motion carried 6-0.
13. ADJOURNMENT 
Mr. Purvis declared the meeting adjourned at 10:18 pm.
