The Sharon Springs City Council met in regular session Monday evening May 1, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. Those present were Mayor Patrick Gibbs, Council Members: Tim Elder, Verlan Wagoner, Amber Fischer, Dennis Mote, Jay Sharp, City Attorney Allan Hurlburt, City Clerk Theresa Hill, City Superintendent Dennis Sharp and Dion Rivera.
Mayor Patrick Gibbs called the regular meeting for May 1, 2023 to order at 5:30 p.m.
Representative Dion Rivera from the Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center provided information about their program. There services are free to children & families to help with emotional support from abuse. The Advocacy has 6 mobile units serving 34 counties in north/south west Kansas. A donation was requested from the City of Sharon Springs to keep these services free. A motion was made by Mr. Sharp to approve $3000.00 to the Western KS Child Advocacy Center for Budget year 2024, Mr. Wagoner seconded the motion, motion approved.
The Bed Tax Committee requested funding for the Wallace County Free Fair for the fireworks - $500.00 and the Fort Wallace Rodeo - $1300.00. Mr. Elder moved to approve the $500.00 for fireworks, motion was seconded by Mr. Sharp, motion approved. Mr. Mote moved to approve the request for $1300.00 from the Fort Wallace Rodeo, Mr. Wagoner seconded the motion, motion approved.
Mr. Wagoner moved to approve the minutes of the April 3rd regular meeting, Mr. Mote seconded the motion, motion approved.
Mr. Sharp made the motion to approve the minutes of the April 18th special meeting, motion was seconded by Mrs. Fischer, motion approved.
Mrs. Fischer moved to accept payroll and vouchers as presented: voucher checks – 30333-30358; manual checks – 30359-30380, ACH #528-529; payroll checks – 30381-30398, ACH #1, Mr. Sharp seconded the motion, motion approved.
City Superintendent Report: Superintendent Sharp gave the City Council a quote
from Brown Wood Preserving Company for 35’ & 40’ electric poles in the amount of $23,280.40. Mr. Wagoner made the motion to approve the $23,280.40 for the electric poles, Mr. Mote seconded the motion, motion approved.
At 5:46 p.m. Mr. Elder moved to go into executive session to discuss non-elected personnel for 5 minutes inviting council members and Superintendent Dennis Sharp, motion was seconded by Mrs. Fischer, motion approved. Mr. Hurlburt and Mrs. Hill left the meeting. At 5:51 p.m. Mr. Hurlburt and Mrs. Hill returned to the meeting. No action was taken.
City Attorney Report: Attorney Allan Hurlburt reported there is concern about Pit Bull dogs in the city limits.
Council Member Reports: Verlan Wagoner reported on grants through KDHE for water lines and lead & copper lines.
City Clerk Report: No Report
